Support Military Moms: The Charities

by Kate on May 13th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized

The Support Military Moms Event kicks off Saturday, Armed Forces Day. In addition to featuring some great miltiary friendly companies and small businesses owned by military moms, I hope to raise some money for a few of my favorite charities that support military families. I know the economy sucks (trust me, I know) but that means these charities need our help NOW more than ever.

In addition to the fact that these organizations are obviously worthwhile and do great work for military families, I’ve got another (much less noble) reason you should donate: you earn one extra entry into every Support Military Moms Event giveaway for every dollar you donate. In other words, donate $15 to Snowball Express and you earn 15 extra entries into every Support Military Moms giveaway. And trust me, the giveaways are great and you want the extra entries.

Now, let me introduce you to the worthwhile charities for which I hope you will open your heart (and wallet) and give. Fisher House, National Military Family Associatioin and Operation Snowball.

Fisher House
The Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, these homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are 38 majestic comfort homes on the grounds of military and VA medical centers across America. (And, in fact, one is being constructed at the base where my husband is stationed.) Each year, they offer more than 210,000 days of lodging to more than 10,000 families in a nurturing environment that allows military and veterans’ families to face a medical crisis together. Here families can focus on the healing process, free from the financial concerns of finding an affordable place to stay, in an unfamiliar city, while a loved one is hospitalized.

Donate to the Fisher House.

National Military Family Association, Military Family Fund
The goals of the NMFA are to educate military families concerning their rights, benefits and services available to them and to inform them regarding issues that affect their lives and to promote and protect the interests of military families by influencing the development of implementation of legislation and policies affecting them.

Your gift to the Military Family Fund will support many of the programs and benefits so vital to military families. Our Association will always need funding to represent the family perspective as changes in the military lifestyle, needs that evolve over time, and extraordinary situations arise.

Donate to NFMA, Military Family Fund.

Snowball Express
A charity for the children of our fallen military heroes, Snowball Express started in early 2006 with a simple idea: Provide hope and new memories to the children of military fallen heroes who have died while on active duty.

Snowball Express sponsors the largest gathering of its kind in the country. Children ages 5 to 18 (with a parent or guardian) who have lost a parent gather to meet other children just like themselves, all expenses paid. This is not a family vacation but a time to meet and simply have “fun” with other children in the same situation. Your donation to Snowball Express will go toward the funding of SBE IV being planned for December in Dallas, Texas.

Donate to Snowball Express.

Please let me know of your donation by sending me a quick email. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

So Much More Than a Clock! My Tot Clock Review

by Kate on May 12th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

It’s no secret sleep doesn’t come easily in my house. Between Baby Girl waking up throughout the night and my Husband snoring, the last thing I need is Toddler Boy interrupting my limited sleep. Thankfully, he is generally a very good sleeper. But, we did have a hiccup several weeks ago – he was waking up way to early in the morning and fighting bedtime. That’s why I couldn’t have been more excited when we had the opportunity to try the My Tot Clock.

Like so many of us, Pamela Gonzalez decided she needed some help to stop her son from waking several times throughout the night. She says,
“I came up with what I thought was a great idea! I would tell Gabriel that he couldn’t get out of bed until the sun woke up. Genius move, right? Well, not exactly. Gabriel woke up every hour to tell me that the sun was awake! I knew I needed something better than the sun to solve this problem! I needed to buy one of those clocks. You know, one of those clocks that changes colors, so children would know when to sleep and when it’s okay to get out of bed. After putting Gabriel back down…again, I hit the Internet (hey, I was up already!), and I started searching for the magic clock! I searched, and searched to no avail. The clock was nowhere to be found, so I vowed that night to invent it!”

Invent she did! Pamela created the My Tot Clock that is an all-in-one sleep aid, alarm clock, and timer aimed at kiddos 2 and older. The Clock has a color-coded face that cues kids to sleep time and wake time. The parent sets the clock, programs bed time, wake time, nap duration, timeout and play duration. You can also program white noise to play at sleep time and music to play at wake time. I was a little intimidated when I saw all the buttons on the back, but it was extremely easy to program and I even cheated and didn’t use the thorough directions.

I was eager to try the My Tot Clock and was thrilled that Toddler Boy was immediately interested when we opened it. He caught on to the color codes right away.
* Green: Encouragement / Play time
* Yellow: Wake time
* Red: Discipline / time out
* Light Blue: Nap
* Dark Blue: Bedtime

Before the My Tot Clock, Toddler Boy would usually wake at 6:30 in the morning and holler quite loudly for me until I went to him. After the My Tot Clock, my little man literally hangs out on his bed talking to himself and allowing me to sleep until after the clock turns yellow. I never would have believed it, but I sure do love that extra half hour or so of sleep!

Toddler Boy relies on it for wake time, and also knows that the blue light means bed time with no questions asked. Before My Tot Clock, we were going through quite the phase where Toddler Boy would drag out bed time for.ever. He would make every request he could think of to get us to go back into his room and put off sleep. Seriously, after My Tot Clock he knows it’s bedtime with no negotiation. My husband even reports that Toddler Boy corrected him at nap time this weekend and said, “Dada, turn on the blue light for night night.”

In addition to cuing the My Tot Clock lets off just enough light to be a perfect night light. I love that the My Tot Clock also includes white noise and nighttime stories. Toddler Boy has totally grown accustomed to his own separate white noise machine so we don’t use that feature but it is an awesome addition to the Clock.

To Buy…? The My Tot Clock has everything covered when it comes to toddler sleep issues. It has really been a great addition to our bedtime routine.

…Or Not to Buy? No guarantees from me that you will have the same results we did. (Although, My Tot Clock does offer a better sleep or your money back.) If your child is stubborn or super strong willed it might be more of a challenge.

Shop! Purchase your own My Tot Clock for $49.95 at http://www.mytotclock.com/. The website also has a great and very informative and helpful set of frequently asked questions and tips for using the clock.

Special Books for your Special Little One

by Kate on May 11th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized

The ThumbPeople Story
Just as our thumb sets us apart from our fingers, our thumbrprint sets us apart and makes us unique. We are all born to be ThumbPeople – blessed and destined to live amazing lives.

Those are profound truths we hope you will embrace:
You are Thumbuddy…

Your child is Thumbuddy…
Thumbuddy special, wonderful, unique, set apart and precious…
A miracle in every way.

If your toddler is anything like mine, books are a large part of your day. We always read several books at night before bed, but stories are also requested randomly throughout the day. It’s always fun to discover new characters and books so we were excited to get a couple Thumbuddy books to enjoy. We received I’ll Always Love My Thumbuddy and the board book Thumbuddy, Thumbuddy, I Love You!

The Thumbuddy series written by Mark Arens stars a sweet little thumb character who actually represents your child. The books praise and affirm your child throughout with lines like “Thumbuddy, Thumbuddy, you are huggable! Thumbuddy, Thumbuddy, truly so loveable!” (from Thumbuddy, Thumbuddy I Love You).

The coolest part about the Thumbuddy series is that after you read the book once, you read it again and replace your child’s name with Thumbuddy’s name. The book then becomes a sweet love story from you to your little one. I think I enjoyed this more than Toddler Boy! I honestly find it to be such a nice way to tell my little guy how much I love him – sentiments that can easily get lost in a day of dirty diapers, toys throwing and tantrums.

“I’ll always love my Thumbuddy,
No matter what you do;
Good or bad or in between,
You’re my special you.”

In addition to the collection of seven books, Thumbpeople also offers music CDs so you can boogie to the sweet sentiments of Thumbuddy. We have the You are Thumbuddy CD which has original lyrics set to fun, familiar childhood songs.

Shop! You can browse and buy the entire collection collection of Thumbuddy books including board books ($8.95) and traditional hardcover books ($14.95), and CDs ($11.95) at the ThumbPeople website.

Sunday Spotlight on Maggie Blue Designs + Giveaway

by Kate on May 10th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Sunday Spotlight, Weekly Features

Maggie Blue Designs is a one-stop shop for original, super fun gifts for little ones. We are now the lucky recipients of some adorable Custom Illustration Memory Cards (you can see more about them when you read on) from Maggie Blue and you have the chance to win some, too. (Sorry, couldn’t resist the temptation to rhyme.)

Maggie, the very busy mom, behind the shop shares some great insight into her business.

TSM: How long have you been making your products? How long have you been selling them?
I suppose the answer here should be years and years… but actually it’s October! I’ve always been artsy, but in school I went towards science instead. But, after ten years as a chemist I really started to feel stifled because I don’t gt to use my artsy side at all. So after a particularly rough day at work I couldn’t sleep and I spent all night sketching out ideas. I decided to start simple with this line of hats that looks like they are eating your head; a frog, fish, lobster, whale, etc. After those started selling I just kept expanding and trying new things and here I am.

TSM: What is your favorite item to make?
I know this will sound like I’m trying to promote the giveaway, but it’s the illustrations. For two reasons:
1. I really enjoy seeing the pictures, turning them into something fun, and then writing up a little narration about the subjects on the back. It gives me a chance to actually be a part of their life for one brief moment. That’s pretty cool.
2. I had no idea until I got into it but I really love the computer graphics side of things. I love making art with my computer. Don’t get me wrong, I love making art the old fashioned way, too. And every illustrations starts with me, a pen and a piece of paper. But, once I get it into the cojmputer and get to working on it… it’s a whole different world of artistic opportunity.

How unique and fun are these? (You can click the image to see it larger.) Maggie customizes the cards to be just how you like them and for whatever occasion you like.

TSM: Do you give your stuff as gifts to friends and family?
Much to their chagrin… yes. For Christmas this year, I bought exactly three gifts at the store. (I didn’t think they’d apreciate a hand knitted Wii game… somehow just not the same.)

TSM: No, not quite the same. LOL.
And definitely every party my daughter gets invited to I bring something from my product line. (She’s only three and three year olds seem to appreicate my stuff the most.) It’s usually Monster Totes for the boys and aprons for the girls.

I just love the Monster Totes – they are so fun!

TSM: How do you find the time to make your goods?
Ha ha ha. Oh… you were serious? Since I work full time my creating time is after I put the kids to bed, and before they wake up. When I have too many orders to fill the kids spend a Saturday with Grandma and I work all day. I’m actually really lucky because my husband and I trade off working so that one of us is always home with the kids, which is awesome… but it doesn’t always allow for extra sewing time at all.

TSM: Do you have any plans for additional products or business expansion?
Emphatically yes. But’s it part of the elusive time thing. I always wonder if I had more time could I promote more, create more, sleep more?

TSM: Sleep is good…We all need more!
I’m currently working on a website, and I’ve been trying to do a grassroots promotion effort through great mom blogs just like this. Bringing my products to the people and hoping they dig them enough to buy something and pass it on to their friends.

TSM: What’s the best part of owning your own business?
I think probably the sense of pride in my work. It’s great designing something and having it come out well. Sometimes I love a design so much that I can’t wait to share it with everyone I know (and everyone I don’t know). I’ve always been sort of a reserved person, especially in the sense of tooting my own horn. I always thought it was snotty… but when it comes to my designs I LOVE to share my products with anyone who wants to listen.

TSM: I think Maggie has reason to share her products and toot her horn. As you know, I spent a lot of time shopping around and I think Maggie Blue offers some of the most unique and totally cute things I’ve seen. You can read more about Maggie and her shop on her blog.

Happy Mother’s Day!

by Kate on May 10th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized

So far it’s a day just like any other. Wait, I take that back. Baby Girl gave me a great Mother’s Day present and she only woke up twice last night – 12:30 and 6:30! Nice. And, Toddler Boy gave me his sippy cup which he insisted I unwrap. He assured me it was actually a beautiful dog treat he made for me at school. Um, okay… Thanks, I think.

My husband is at work right now. Voluntarily. But it was a good chance for him to fly so I’m over it. When my husband gets home, I may treat myself to a dress I tried on the other day at the mall. I’ve decided I really like it and want to wear it to my college reunion in two weeks.

My best Mama’s Day present? From NBC. Justin Timberlake hosted Saturday Night Live last night.

What are you up to today? Any big Mother’s Day plans?

It’s hard to choose one feature I like, because I like all of them! Lighting is my biggest challenge. Even if I knew the right lighting, I don’t have time with my three year old to move my location or hers – the moments I want to capture pass by very quickly. So I will choose LightZone, relight, as my favorite feature, but I have to say that the Styles is awesome too to create dramatic black and white. Thanks for an awesome and very generous giveaway!!!

my biggest challenge is the camera delay – my son’s already moving by the time it snaps!

My biggest challenge is lighting for sure. I am trying to learn to shoot without flash, but am only successful a small amount of time. I think this type of editing tool would be very helpful!

The relighting tool is very interesting!!!!

My biggest challenge is getting both kids to sit still and even look in the general direction of the camera at the same time!

Wow, the relight feature is great. I have so many pictures that I love but are just a little too dark because I hate using my flash.
