Ten Dollar Tuesday: Envirosax

by Kate on April 21st, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Ten Dollar Tuesday
Since we’re shopping green this week I think we need a great bag for all our goodies. Obviously you know the benefits of a reusable bag over collecting a bazillion plastic ones at the grocery store. The challenge for me seems to be actually remembering to take my darn bags with me. You think if I had a fun, stylish bag I actually want to use I might remember my shopping bag? Yea, that’s what I thought.

I just love the enormous selection of good-looking designs at Envirosax.

Lightweight polyester, portable, waterproof, and weighing just 1.4oz each… With reinforced seams, each surprisingly large bag can hold a weight the equivalent of two supermarket plastic bags.And, with a bag this cute, don’t limit it to the grocery store. Take it to the mall and put your purchases in here rather than accumulating another Gymboree or Williams-Sonoma bag.

Envirosax even has a line of children’s bags so you can get your little one in on the action. Wouldn’t this be a great bag to carry a few books or toys for a playdate?Now, I know you can buy a reusable bag at your local grocery store or commissary, but, I’m sorry, those are just boring and no fun. I vote we splurge on a bag that’s as stylish as we are! Who’s with me?

Shop! Envirosax greengrocer series bags are $7.95. The kids series and the graphic series (my favorite!) are $8.50. You can also buy bundle of 5 Envirosax for $37.95.

Green Shopping with Green Mama’s Pad

by Kate on April 21st, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized

A big welcome to Marianna who hopped on over from Green Mama’s Pad to talk about shopping green. Marianna started blogging in January to share her family’s “going green” journey. She is the mama to three young boys – including 22 month old twins! – and is as nice as they come. Let her know you enjoyed her visit to The Shopping Mama with a comment here and a trip over to Green Mama’s Pad.

When trying to shop for green things for our kids, it can be completely overwhelming. There is so much out there, where do you start? Well first and foremost, you are going to bring you reusable shopping bags with you! Just say no to yucky plastic bags and bring your own to go shopping. What, you don’t have any? No problem! There are tons of great bags out there, so here are a few to look at: ChicoBags, Envirosax, and Flip & Tumble. OK now that you have your bag, let’s do some shopping!

Feeding Supplies
I thought it was important to start here so we can cover BPA in bottles, cups, etc. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a synthetic estrogen used to harden polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin. Some of the risks associated with BPA include prostate and breast cancer, higher rates of miscarriage, immune system dysfunction, testicular abnormalities in boys and puberty in girls younger than eight years old. This has been in the news a lot in the past few years due to BPA in bottles and sippy cups. Most baby bottle manufacturers have since removed BPA from their products. So when shopping for any feeding and drinking items, this includes bottles, sippy cups, utensils, bowls, plates and even pacifiers, look for packages that are labeled BPA free. A great site to check out is The ZRecs Guide where you can find BPA information all of these types of products. If you are still unsure, check with the manufacturer. We have been switching to stainless steel sippy cups like The Safe Sippy and I have been very pleased.

For older kids who may be in school, there are so many great eco-friendly options for packing lunches. I know there are only a few months left in the school year, but with summer comes trips to the park and beach and maybe even camp! So ditch the plastic sandwich baggies and try reusable stainless steel containers like LunchBots. They are the perfect size for a sandwich or other yummy foods. How about an entire waste-free lunch kit? Kids Conserve kits have everything you need: napkin, water bottle, stainless steel containers, fabric sandwich bags and a cute bag to carry it all in

Toys
Are you trying to cut back on the plastic toys with flashing lights and obnoxious sounds? Looking for things that spark the imagination? Me too. My favorite online toy store is Oompa Toys. They have wooden toys, organic dolls and so much more. I’ve ordered toys for my twins from there and I was extremely pleased. They have a huge selection of wood and fabric play foods and I’m hoping to get some for their 2nd birthday that is coming up. How about something made from recycled materials? Green Toys has trucks, a tea set, a tool set and other neat toys all made from recycled plastic milk jugs! You also need to check out Sprig Toys. Their toys are made from recycled wood and reclaimed plastic. Even though some of the toys have lights, there are no batteries required. I love that. Oh and I almost forgot Boon

Clothing
In my experience, organic clothing can be a bit pricey. Its hard to justify spending the extra money on kids clothes that they will outgrow in a year. But traditional cotton is grown with a lot of pesticides, so if you can buy organic, do it. Fortunately, major stores like Target are now carrying organic clothes, which should help with the price. Just go to their site and search for “organic clothes” and you will see a bunch of items come up. Walmart has even added some organic shirts to their lineup, you can find some as low as $4.00! Now that is a price I can afford. There selection is very limited, but I’m hoping they will get more soon.

Bedding & Room Decor
For crib bedding Pottery Barn Kids has some cute choices. But once again there is the price factor. Babies R Us has some less expensive options as does Walmart. One thing you also want to look for at these two stores are organic crib mattresses. According to Naturepedic, “Nearly all crib mattresses in use today contain polyurethane foam, vinyl (PVC), phthalates, chemical fire retardants or barriers, and an extensive list of added industrial chemicals.” Such chemicals have been associated with health problems and childhood disorders. And the room wouldn’t be complete without green décor! Saplings has lots of eco-friendly décor including reusable wall stickers that are PVC and phthalate free.

So I think our reusable shopping bags are pretty full now, don’t you? Hopefully I’ve given you some good places to start and before you know it your bags and house will be full of eco-friendly stuff! Thanks for shopping with me, I hope you had fun!

Toddler Boy has the pleasure of wearing his very own Finny’s Greens Penne Penguin lap tee. When it arrived, I was immediately impressed by the adorable packaging that is truly ready to gift – no wasteful wrapping paper or gift bag needed. And, the packaging is made with 100% recycled materials and features a pretty ribbon you can easily reuse.

As for the shirt itself, Toddler Boy loves that the tee is soft and super comfortable and that his shirt has a “pendwuin” on it. I love that the graphics wrap around to the back of the tee and that it washes well without fading.

Protect Your Bub with Protect-a-Bub

by Kate on April 19th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized

As the summer approaches – hopefully we’ll finally get some regular sun around here! – it’s important to think about covering little ones. Try as you might to slather your kids in sunscreen, application is not foolproof when you’re dealing with a squirmy baby or a fidgety toddler. Protect-a-Bub is a line of products designed to protect babies and toddlers from the sun’s harmful rays, and car seat shades, stroller shades and swim wear.

Some important features of Protect-a-Bub products:
* UPF 50+
* Allows for Air Circulation
* Fabric returns to original UPF 50+ after stretching
* Prevents area from becoming too warm for baby
* Breathable fabric

We had the opportunity to try the UPF 50+ Carseat Sunshade Attachment. The Sunshade attaches easily to the carseat and has side flaps you can use for additonal protection. It works with both our carseats – Toddler Boy’s toddler carseat and Baby Girl’s rear-facing infant seat. Toddler Boy has just started complaining about the sun getting in his eyes in the car. This Sunshade was great because it didn’t obstruct his view but kept the sun from bothering him. And, frankly, I like any product that keeps him happy in the car!

I love the variety and practicality on Protect-a-Bub stroller shades. Some strollers have little to no sun protection but Protect-a-Bub definitely has you covered. They have shades to fit with every stroller you can imagine. Shades are available for single, double, jogger strollers and there is even a shade for the back tandem seat. Protect-a-Bub is adding Chocolate Brown to the existing Navy and Black options so you can definitely find something to coordinate with your stroller.

Shop! Check out the entire line of Protect-a-Bub products at http://www.protectabub.com/ and use the code “protect4spring” for 10% off your purchase.

More Shopping! Protect-a-Bub is discontinuing several items, including swimsuits, swim hats and protect your own hats. To order these items, email info@protectabub.com.

Sunday Spotlight on Scribble It + Giveaway (Closed)

by Kate on April 19th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized

One of my very first purchases on Etsy long ago was a Custom Last Name Wreath for our front door from Scribble It. The “wreath,” made of vinyl on tin, has been proudly hanging on our door since. I was, and remain, very impressed with Cammi, the designer. She is so nice and easy to work with. When I was considering buying my Wreath last year she created a proof for me to make sure I liked it before I paid for it.

If you aren’t familiar with vinyl, you should be! It’s a great way to add some art and liven up a wall without the hassle (or permanence) of paint because it’s easy to apply and easy to remove. And Scribble It vinyl art, in particular, is awesome – the designs are eye-catching, sophisticated and unique. I got the chance to ask Cammi some questions about Scribble It to learn more about her work.

TSM: How long have you been making vinyl art? How long have you been selling?
I have been in the vinyl art business for over 2 years now, and am loving it still! It has been such a fun journey, being a mother of three I needed a creative outlet and the vinyl has done just that.

TSM: What is your favorite item?
My favorite item is our silhouettes. You send a profile picture and I turn your photo into vinyl wall art to be placed in a frame for years to come or directly on the wall. I have all of my children on the wall and it looks amazing, and so personal!

TSM: Do you give vinyl as gifts to friends/family?
YES! I’m sure they are tired of getting vinyl gifts, but I love giving them and I can center the gift around something personal. My friend is having a hard time getting pregnant and so she posted on her blog that her favorite quote is: “Come what may and love it.” I designed a decal for her, and how she has that hanging in her house when she feels down.

TSM: How do you find the time to make everything?
When my crazy kids are napping! It is such a nice break in the middle of the day, plus I work on the vinyl when they have gone to bed.

TSM: Do you have any plans for additional products or business expansion?
Yes, I have another store: pinksprinkleprints.etsy.com which consists of printable cards, calendars and more.

TSM: You NEED to check out Pink Sprinkle Prints! It’s all so cool. My favorite is the Printable Calendar.

TSM: What’s the best part of owning your own business?
I can set my own hours and if I want a day off, I can take it.

Shop! Scribble It vinyl art is super affordable and a great way to update the design of a room without breaking the bank. I love the rocket ship for my son’s room and I can’t quite pick a favorite flower for my baby girl’s nursery.

Win! Cammi is generously offering one Shopping Mama reader a $15 Gift Certificate so you can liven up a wall or two in your home with Scribble It vinyl!

How to Enter: Visit Scribble It and comment here with your favorite item in the shop.
